Emergency Procedures
When the college receives a telephone call regarding a personal emergency, the student is contacted or the name of the student is placed on the video bulletin boards located throughout the college. Information about the call may be obtained from the College Center information desk or the college receptionist.
Criminal Activity in Progress
- Observe the incident. Do not intervene.
- Send someone to call Security or call Security yourself at 487-8280 or extension 555.
- Note suspect description, vehicle license number, and direction of travel, if applicable.
- Give aid to the victim, if applicable, until Security arrives.
Suspicious Activity
- Notify Security immediately at 487-8280 or extension 555.
- Observe and record description of suspicious person.
- Take note of vehicle, vehicle license number and direction of travel, if applicable.
Medical Assistance
- Stay with the sick or injured person.
- Have someone notify Security at 487-8280 or extension 555.
- If this is a life threatening situation, call 911.
- Notify Security at 487-8280 or extension 555 if someone has already called 911.
Utility Failure (Electric)
- Notify Security immediately at 487-8280 or extension 555.
- Move to a natural light area or to an area that is on emergency power.
- If it is not a storm-related failure, leave the building and wait for power to be restored.
- If it is storm related, move to one of the
refuge areas on campus:
- Library tunnel
- Stairwells
- Interior rooms without windows
- Interior corridors
- Notify Security of other facility problems. Security will contact the Physical Plant Director.
Elevator Malfunction
- Outside the elevator, notify Security immediately at 487-8280 or extension 555.
- Inside the elevator, push the speaker button to call Security.
- Security will call "Emergency Elevator Service" and respond to the malfunctioning elevator.
Tornado Warning
- Security monitors weather conditions. In the event of a tornado warning affecting the college, the "Hallway Public Address System," the "Classroom Intercom System" and the "Voice-mail System" will be used to notify people on campus.
- Take Charge - Move students and all others to the refuge areas on campus.
Stay away from windows when possible. Try to get to lower levels.

- Security will announce the "All Clear" when the danger has subsided.
Fire on Campus
Small Fire
- If it is a small controlled ifre, notify Security immediately at 487-8280 or extension 555.
- Try to contain the fire with fire extinguishers (located throughout campus).
- Security will respond to the location of the fire and take appropriate action.
Major Fire
- If it is a major fire and/or explosion, activate the "Emergency Fire Evacuation System" by pulling a wall-mounted pull station near the incident.
- Call the Police/Fire department at 911.
- Call Security at 487-8280 or extension 555.
- Security will call 911 to confirm the situation with the 911 dispatchers.
- Assist in evacuating the building
- Do not use elevators during a major fire emergency.
- Security will prepare for the arrival of the firefighters and help evacuate the building.
- The "All Clear" will be given after the danger has subsided.
Chemical Spills
- Call the Police/Fire department at 911.
- Notify Security at 487-8280 or extension 555.
- Do not try to deal with a chemical spill if you have not been trained.
- If you are contaminated, rinse yourself with large amounts of water.
Bomb Threat
- If you receive a bomb threat, try to find out:
- Where the bomb is
- When it will explode
- What it looks like
- Why the bomb was planted
- Take notes.
- Immediately after you hang up the phone, dial *57 so the police will be able to trace the call. Then call Security at 487-8280 or extension 555.
- Security will have the Bloomington Police respond to help access the content of the threat.
- A thorough search will be made by designated college staff members and the Bloomington Police Officers.
- Building evacuation may be necessary. If necessary, it will be announced on the "Hallway Public Address System," the "Classroom Intercom System" and the "Voice-mail System."
- Security will announce the "All Clear" when the danger has subsided.
