Mission Statement

The Communication department promotes the study, teaching, application and assessment of human communication and mass communication concepts and skills.  We believe in the centrality of communication in our personal, professional and public lives.

The faculty in the communication Department are diverse in their academic training and background, yet offer similar experiences in the theoretical and practical applications of communication disciplines which include human communication and mass communication.  The faculty in Communication are noted for their quality instruction and dynamic approaches to fostering student learning.

The Department of Communication at Normandale Community College offers a complete selection of lower division courses for a major in Communication and Mass Communication.  Students planning a four-year college degree typically include 2-4 courses in Communication and Mass Communication while they complete the Associate of Arts degree at Normandale.  While students are able to fully transfer to colleges throughout the nation, the majority of our students plan to transfer to a Minnesota State University, the University of Minnesota or a private regional university.  Many of the four-year transfer colleges and universities offer excellent degree programs in Communication and Mass Communication.

Many Students also take Communication and mass Communication courses to develope personal skills, because of an interest in areas related to Communication and Mass communication, or for career enhancement.  Other Students take Communication and Mass Communication courses to fulfill requirements for a two-year Associate in Science or Associate in Applied Science degree.

A Communication course is required for lower division Minnesota Transfer Curriculum and Normandale graduation requirements.

Careers related to majors in communication and mass communication include human relations, business communication, training, consulting, education, social work, counseling international business and relations, sales, marketing, law, journalism, broadcasting (over the air and internet), public relations, advertising and professional writing.  In addition, many students in communication and mass communication are well-prepared for graduate programs in a variety of fields.
