Program Accreditation

Assessment is used throughout Normandale to support and improve student learning and development. Each college employee has been asked to reflect on how their workgroup contributes to and measures its contribution to student learning and/or development. Assessment results are being compiled and disseminated so that they may be used in planning, budgeting and decision making at the college level. We expect that each student will become aware of the value that the entire Normandale community places on their learning. The statement which follows is included in the Normandale catalog.

Assessment of Student Learning

As active learners at Normandale students share the responsibility for their learning. We believe in using assessment to provide students the feedback they need to monitor progress toward their goals. We also use assessment as a vehicle for educational improvement. Assessment helps us identify where and how our programs are succeeding and where changes need to be made.

The placement tests that students take when they enter Normandale are part of MnSCU's "Assessment for College Readiness" program. They are intended to help students understand their initial learning levels and to place them into courses in which they can be successful. The results of the placement tests also allow the College to identify changes in each new cohort of students.

Students will be assessed in their classes by instructors who will use the results to guide instruction. They will participate as well in the assessment of our programs by providing evidence of their learning. Students will be asked to complete a number of surveys. In part, these ask about our programs and services; answers given by students will help us identify areas which need improvement. Our surveys also ask about changes in students: their attitudes, opinions, plans, and self-perception. Students may also have the opportunity to participate in a focus group or structured interview to help us measure how their experiences at Normandale are affecting them.

We realize that students' time is precious, and believe the feedback benefit of assessment - to the institution and to the student - is worth the investment.
